‘Inanimate reason’ is a largely autobiographical project made using a pinhole method to create environmental (sometimes self) portraits. Drawn from memory, the images depict characters playing a marionette, to explore how the past communicates with and determines the present (and visa versa). The photographs echo Magritte’s non human figures, and Duchamp’s mannequin, suggesting a dialogue between them. Dark yet playful, sometimes difficult to look at, the images form a narrative examining the forces of memory upon the artist, and by proxy, the viewer.
